Night Market Culture in Taiwan

Night markets are the most special feature of Taiwanese culture, tourists can easily see night markets almost everywhere on this small island. In this article, we would love to introduce to you three best night markets in Taipei and we are sure that you would have a great experience learning the local culture here ☺️.


1. Shilin (Shihlin) Night Market 士林夜市

Shilin (Shihlin) Night Market is one of the largest, crowded and famous night markets in Taiwan. It is located in Shilin District, Taipei with two distinct sections sharing a symbiotic relationship: a section that accommodates mostly food vendors and small restaurants in the old Shilin Market building; and the surrounding businesses and shops selling other non-food items. 

Aside from the food heaven, you can entertain yourself at cinemas, video arcades, and karaoke bars in the area too. Majority of the local businesses and vendors begin opening approximately at 4p.m.. As the evening approaches, the crowd increases as the students and workers are off from their schools and work, thus the peak time normally falls between 20:00 and 23:00. Businesses gradually whine down around at 1a.m. or 2a.m.

Famous foods

Bubble tea, Fried buns, Fried chicken fillet, Lemon aiyu jelly, Oyster omelet, Oyster vermicelli, Peanut candy, Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Small sausage in larger sausage, stinky tofu, Taiwanese “tempura".


Public transportation:

MRT: Take the Red Line to Jiantan Station (劍潭), not Shilin Station. Leave from Exit 1 and cross the street to the left to enter the night market. 


2. Raohe Street Night Market 饒河街觀光夜市

The Raohe Street Night Market is one of the historical traditional Taiwanese night markets in Songshan District, Taipei. It is established on Raohe Street and runs for almost 600 meters. Another iconic symbol of Songshan District is the Ciyou Temple that came into existence during the Qing Dynasty era. Other than night foods and snacks, quaint shops and stalls, and carnival games with prizes also can be found in the street.

Public transportation:

  • MRT: Take the Green Line to  Songshan (松山) station, exit 5. The night market entrance is just to the right across the street next to the temple.

  • Train: From Taipei Main Station, take any local train northbound (區間車) to Songshan Station (松山), then locate MRT exit 5.


3. Ximending Night Market

Ximending is entitled as a shopping heaven as its modernity highly attracts the youngsters and Westerners to stop by and visit the shoplets and food stalls as well as indulging in the amusement and wellness centers such as various CD shops, arcades, hair salons, reflexology massage, Eslite Department Stores, movie theaters, Karaoke and many others. This is a melting pot for a diverse culture where both international and domestic travellers gather around. The street lights in Ximending light up when the sun sets and the throngs gradually escalate. Besides hunting down souvenirs, some precious historical Japanese-influenced constructions and buildings are worth to be appreciated including Matsu Temple and Red House Theater.

鸭肉扁 Ya Rou Bian, 阿宗麵線 Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle, 赛门甜不辣Simon food Tempura and other delicacies that pleasure your taste buds.

1. Take bus no. 9, 12, 49, 202, 205, 206, 212, 218, 223, 231, 234, 242, 246, 249, 250, 252, 253, 260, 262, 263, 265, 302, 204, 207, 310, 527, 601, 604, 624, 628, 651, 652, 660, 667, 701, 702, 703 or 705 to MRT Ximen Station stop (捷運西門站).

2. Take bus no. 62, 229, 231, 234, 242, 264 or 310 Sub line (310副) to Ximen Elementary School (西門國小).

3. Take bus no. 18, 221, 232, 235, 257, 513, 621, 635, 540, 659, 663 or Blue 2 to Ximen Market stop (西門市場站).

  • MRT: Take Taipei MRT-Bannan Line (Blue line) to of Ximen Station (捷運西門站), Exit 6.
